Ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος των Δελφών, από τους σημαντικότερους του κόσμου, χαίρει μοναδικής, αμφιθεατρικής θέσης ανάμεσα σε δύο ψηλούς κάθετους βράχους, τις Φαιδριάδες Πέτρες. Εδώ λέγεται πως συναντήθηκαν οι δύο αετοί που έστειλε ο Δίας από τα άκρα του σύμπαντος για να βρει το κέντρο του κόσμου. Γι’ αυτό και οι Δελφοί ταυτίστηκαν με τον ομφαλό της Γης. Ένα από τα πλέον χαρα κτηριστικά μνημεία του αρχαιολογικού χώρου, αυτό που ενδεχομένως κλέβει την παράσταση, είναι η Θόλος του ιερού της Αθηνάς Προναίας (που απεικονίζεται εδώ). Η χρήση του κομψού κυκλικού οικοδομήματος, που χρονολογείται πιθανότατα στο 380 π.Χ., παραμένει άγνωστη.
The archaeological site of Delphi, among the most important in the world, is nestled between two steep rocks known as the Phaedriades. It is said that when Zeus released two eagles – one in the east and one in the west – to determine the center of the earth, the eagles met at Delphi, which is why this spot became known as the earth’s omphalos (navel). One of the most important monuments to be found here, and probably the scene-stealer of the whole site, is the Tholos (pictured here), an elegant circular building in the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia dating to around 380 BC, whose function remains unknown.
