Sagiada/ Σαγιάδα

01. ΟΥΖΟ ΚΑΙ ΘΑΛΑΣΣΙΝΑ ΣΤΗ ΣΑΓΙΑΔΑ (43χλμ. - 1 ώρα από τα Σύβοτα)

Μια μικρή περατζάδα, μια μεγάλη παραλία, δύο – τρία ταβερνάκια που στήνουν τραπέζια μπροστά στο νερό. Ούζο στα ποτήρια, ολόφρεσκα ψάρια και θαλασσινά, ένα φαντασμαγορικό ηλιοβασίλεμα και θέα στην Κέρκυρα. Αυτό είναι το σκηνικό που σας περιμένει στο ψαροχώρι της Σαγιάδας, μόλις 10χλμ. από τα σύνορα με την Αλβανία. Οι παραλίες Κεραμίδι και Στροβίλι βορειότερα και το παλιό χωριό με τα πέτρινα σπίτια παραδοσιακής αρχιτεκτονικής είναι λόγοι για να πάτε στην Σαγιάδα έτσι κι αλλιώς ωστόσο όλοι θα σας στείλουν εδώ για φαγητό. Γιατί τα ψάρια που σερβίρονται στο δημοφιλές μεταξύ των σκαφάτων του Ιονίου λιμανάκι Σκάλωμα κυριολεκτικά... σπαρταράνε: 700 οι κάτοικοι του χωριού, 50 τουλάχιστον οι ψαράδες!

01. ΟUΖΟ AND SEAFOOD AT SAGIADA (43klm. - 1 hour from Syvota)

A short promenade, a long beachfront, a spec-tacular sunset and a view of Corfu await visitors to the fishing village of Sagiada, just 10k from the border with Albania, along with several small tav-ernas with tables at the water's edge, where glasses of ouzo, plates of deliciously fresh fish and other seafood are served. The beaches of Keramidi and Strovili further north, along with the old settle-ment with its traditional stone houses, are reason enough to visit Sagiada, but most people will send you here for the delicious food. That's because the fish served at the tavernas in the tiny harbor called Skaloma, so popular with yachties who sail the Io-nian, are all freshly caught. Not surprising when you consider that at least 50 of the village's 700 residents are fishermen! 

Kalamas/ Καλαμας

02. ΑΚΟΛΟΥΘΩΝΤΑΣ ΤΟΝ ΚΑΛΑΜΑ (60χλμ., 1 ώρα και 20' από τα Σύβοτα)

Με μήκος περίπου 115χλμ., είναι από τους μεγαλύτερους ποταμούς Ηπείρου. Πηγάζει κοντά στην Νεμέρτσικα Ιωαννίνων και εκβάλλει στο Ιόνιο, σχηματίζοντας ένα εντυπωσιακό δέλτα ανάμεσα στην Ηγουμενίτσα και την Σαγιάδα. Στην αρχαιότητα ονομαζόταν Θύαμις και ήταν πλωτός, γι' αυτό και στις όχθες του έχουν ανασκαφεί αρχαίες και βυζαντινές πόλεις και υπάρχουν μύλοι και γεφύρια. Από τα πιο εντυπωσιακά σημεία (και πιο εύκολα στην πρόσβαση) είναι τα Στενά και οι εκβολές του. Στα Στενά βρίσκεται και η ερειπωμένη γέφυρα της Μπολιάνας, ενώ στην πλάγια του βουνού – στη θέση Πέντε Εκκλησιές – η βυζαντινή πολύ Οσδίνα, όπου θα δείτε και τους ωραίους ναούς των Ταξιαρχών και της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου. Στο δέλτα του ποταμού, το οποίο μπορείτε να προσεγγίζετε από τον από το χωριό Ράγιο, η περιήγηση στους χωματόδρομους είναι περίπλοκη λόγω των πολλών διακλαδώσεων, ωστόσο εικόνες μαγεύουν παραποτάμια δάση, λιμνοθάλασσες με εκατοντάδες είδη πουλιών, καλαμιώνες, υγρολίβαδα, ζώα που βοσκούν αμέριμνα. 02. FOLLOWING THE KALAMAS (60klm. -1 h2Om from Syvota) 

Running for approximately 115k, the Kalamas is one of the longest rivers in Epirus. It rises near Nemertsika Mountain in the Ioannina region and flows down to the Ionian Sea, forming an impressive delta between Igoumenitsa and Sagiada. In antiquity, it was called Thyamis and was navigable, which explains the remains of ancient and Byzantine towns discovered during excavations along its banks, together with mills and bridges standing in plain sight. Among its most stunning and easily accessible stretches are the area around Stena (i.e., "gorge") and its estuary. At Stena, there are the ruins of the Boliana Bridge and, on a mountain slope nearby, the Byzantine citadel of Osdina in an area called Pente Ekklisies (i.e. "five churches") where the beautiful churches of the Holy Archangels and the Dormition of the Mother of God. At the river delta, which can be accessed from Ragio village, the maze of dirt roads can be tricky to navigate, but the beautiful scenery makes it well worthwhile: river-side woodlands; lagoons that are home to hundreds of species of birds; reed beds; and lush meadows with animals peacefully grazing... 

Monastery of Saint Minas/ Μοναστήρι Αγίου Μηνά

03. ΠΡΟΣΚΥΝΗΜΑ ΣΕ ΙΔΙΑΙΤΕΡΑ ΜΟΝΑΣΤΗΡΙΑ (45-50χλμ., 1 ώρα και 10' από τα Σύβοτα)

Μονή Γερομερίου, Μονή Αγίου Μηνά Κοκκινολιθαρίου, ασκητάριο Οσίου Νείλου: τρία προσκυνήματα διαφορετικά από όλα τ' άλλα- κυρίως λόγω θέσης- τα οποία σχετίζονται μεταξύ τους και είναι πολύ αγαπητά στους ντόπιους. Ο Όσιος Νείλος είαι ένα ταπεινό, σπηλαιώδες εκκλησάκι μέσα στο βράχο Ροδάνι, πάνω από το οποίο βρίσκεται το ασκηταριό όπου έζησε για λίγα χρόνια ο όσιος. Ο ίδιος, μαζί με τη μικρή αδελφότητα που σχημάτισε, ίδρυσε στις αρχές του 14ου αιώνα τη Μονή Γηρομερίου, η οποία υπήρξε σπουδαίο μόνο αστικό κέντρο την εποχή του Δεσποτάτου της Ηπείρου και φιλοξένησε ιερατική σχολή και κρυφό σχολειό. Τοιχογραφίες δύο φάσεων- μία μίξη βυζαντινής και δυτικής τέχνης του 16ου αιώνα και μία λαϊκότροπη του 17ου αιώνα εντυπωσιάζουν στο εσωτερικό της και θα σας μιλήσουν για αυτές οι τρεις μοναχοί που ζουν εδώ. Μετόχι της μονής είναι ο Άγιος Μηνάς στο Κοκκινολιθάρι (φωτογραφία). Χρονολογείται στο 18ο αιώνα και βρίσκεται στην κορυφή ενός μικρού κωνικού βράχου που του δίνει το προσωνύμιο "μετέωρο της Ηπείρου". Παρότι οι περισσότεροι φτάνουν εδώ για τη δροσιά και την ταβέρνα της πλατείας, όλοι έχουν να θυμηθούν ένα θαύμα του αγίου!

03 PILGRIMAGE TO INTRIGUING MONASTERIES (45-50klm. - 1h1Om from Syvota) 

The Monastery of Giromeri, the Monastery of St. Minas at Kokkin-olithari and the Hermitage of St. Nilos are three places of pilgrimage notable for their unusual settings and much beloved by the local people. The hermitage is a humble cave dwelling where the saint himself lived for several years; below it, there is a small chapel. It is this same St. Nilos who, together with a band of brothers, founded the Monastery of Giromeri in the 14th c. The monastery, which stands on the wooded slopes of Mount Farmakovouni, went on to become one of the most important monastic centers during the period of the Despotate of Epirus and later hosted both a seminary and a "Secret School" during the Turkish occu-pation. The interior of the Katholikon (main church) is decorated with impressive wall paintings from two periods, one a mix of Byzantine and Western art dating to the 16th c. and the other in the popular style of the 17th c. You can learn more about these works from the three monks living at the monastery. The Monastery of St. Minas at Kokkinolithari (pictured) is a dependency of Giromeri. The monastery perches atop a small cone-shaped rock, earning it the nickname "Meteora of Epirus". The locals who frequent the village square below this imposing edifice go there mostly for secular purposes - the cool shade and the small tav-erna - but just ask them and they can all tell you stories of the miracles they credit to their venerated monastery. 

Vothnes/ Βόθνες

04. ΠΕΖΟΠΟΡΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΚΟΛΥΜΠΙ ΣΤΙΣ ΒΟΘΝΕΣ (50 χλμ., 1 ώρα και 15' από τα Σύβοτα)

Μεγάλες βάθρες με κρυστάλλινα νερά, καταρράκτες, νερά που τρέχουν από παντού, πλούσια βλάστηση. Οι Βόθνες είανι οι μικρές λίμνες που σχηματίζονται διαδοχικά κατά μήκος του ρέματος της Δάφνης – οπότε μπορείτε να περπατήσετε όσο αντέχετε. Όσο πιο βαθιά στο φαράγγι μπαίνετε βέβαια, τόσο ωραιότερο γίνεται το σκηνικό. Για να τις προσεγγίσετε, θα χρειαστεί να πεζοπορήσετε για μία ώρα περίπου στο ωραίο καλντερίμι του Λάγγαρη, που ξεκίνα λίγα χιλιόμετρα πριν από το χωριό Κοκκινολιθάρι (υπάρχει σχετική πινακίδα) και κατασκευάστηκε κατά την περίοδο της Τουρκοκρατίας. Μέσω αυτού μετακινούνταν οι νομάδες της Ηπείρου αλλά και μεταφερόταν προς τα Γιάννενα το όνομαστο τότε αλάτι την Σαγιάδας.

04 HIKE AND SWIM AT VOTHNES (50k- 1h15m from Syvota) 

A dramatic gorge, large river pools with crystal-clear water, a suc-cession of waterfalls, streams flowing everywhere, lush vegetation... These pools form in the bed of the Dafni River and extend over some distance, providing truly stunning scenery for a hike. The deeper you proceed into the gorge, the more delightful it becomes. To enter the gorge, you need to walk for about an hour along the Laggaris, a beauti-ful stone path that starts just before the village of Kokkinolithari (look for the signpost). Built during the Ottoman occupation, this path was used by the nomadic mountain communities of Epirus, as well as for the transport of the famed salt of Sagiada across to Ioannina.
